The ancient Mediterranean world used the terms “rich” and “poor” much differently than we do today.  Then, people who could guarantee their material future from their present wealth were “rich”; the “poor” could not, and lived from day to day.

Only about 5 % of people were“rich,” and there was no middle class to speak of, only some people who were a little less poor than others.  By today’s standards, in most liberal democracies that are more or less “welfare states,” our poor are relatively well-off compared to the poor of the Third World.

On May 23, Men’s Breakfast looks carefully at Luke 18:18-30—Jesus’ Option for the Poor—and Ours.  We meet at 6:30 on Wednesday mornings.

Terrace will host its next Life Skills Retreat for women on Saturday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Participants will get to choose from six different classes, including affirming yourself, women’s health issues, dressing with confidence and style, pursuing your educational dreams, conflict resolution and God’s healing grace.

Lunch will be provided and the retreat will culminate with a worship service.

For more information on the retreat or volunteering your time, contact Tammy Heinrich at 713-686-4328 or theinrich@terraceumc.org.

When some people talk about the problems they have with Christianity and the church, they often name certain attitudes and behaviors they believe are practiced too often—judging others, condemning people of other faiths, rejecting science, injecting politics into faith, and being anti-homosexual.  Participants in this study will gain a different way of understanding these issues.  Click here to read discussion points for each session.

The six-week study, When Christians Get it Wrong, will be taught on Thursdays by Dr. Jeff Morgan from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Center.  The study will begin April 19, and continue through May 24.  Participants may attend one or all of the sessions.  A book is available at a cost of $12 and may be purchased at the class.

Terrace has been recognized by United Methodist Communications (UMCom) as an official “Welcoming Congregation” for the 2011 year.  This marks the 3rd consecutive year that Terrace has received this recognition.

“Welcoming Congregations” are a select group of United Methodist congregations nationwide that meets criteria including embracing newcomers and providing opportunities in discipleship.

For the past 8 years, “Open hearts, Open minds, Open doors” has been the theme of the denomination supported with a series of national cable TV advertising, supplemented by regional and local church participation. The overall aim of the effort was to invite people, to enter into connection with the Christian community as they seek meaning and purpose in their lives.

Being recognized as a Welcoming Congregation affirms Terrace’s mission to be a community of faith that is Transforming Lives Through Connections.

Terrace has elected new church officers for 2012.  Go to Lay Leadership to see the list.
